Job Title: Inspector
Department: Production

Reporting to: Production Supervision and Altens Facility Supervisor
Responsible for: No line management responsibility

Job Purpose

The main purpose of this position is to carry out inspections on machined and fabricated components and to maintain records of all inspection operations.

Main Responsibilities

  • Carry out dimensional, hardness and surface condition inspections on components in accordance with relevant Customer or Company specifications and work instructions.
  • Liaise with Customer’s quality and engineering departments in relation to production and inspection operations to ensure maximum capacity/minimise downtime is achieved from all equipment.
  • Maintain records of all inspection operations carried out, in accordance with the requirements of the Quality Management System.
  • Ensure all inspection equipment and manufacturing measuring equipment is calibrated in accordance with the requirements of the Quality Management System and maintain calibrations records, in accordance with the requirements of the Quality Management System.
  • Understand and apply the requirements of the Quality Management System and in particular to the requirements for inspection and production.
  • Follow the requirements of quality plans, route sheets and specific work instructions.
  • Take all reasonable steps to safeguard personal health and safety, and that of any other person who may be affected by your actions, and to observe at all times published safety rules and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and tidy working environment.
  • Plan work in accordance with priorities communicated by the Production Manager or his/her nominated deputies to ensure minimum disruption to the production schedule.
  • Record results of inspections on formats that are specified by the QA Department (a combination of controlled company QA Forms and specific customer formats).
  • Carry out internal calibration activities on Workshop Measuring Equipment in accordance with the requirements of the Quality Management System
  • Carry out any other reasonable task requested by company management.

Recruitment Specification

Skills and Abilities

  • Dimensional accuracy, arithmetical skills, ability to read and interpret drawings.
  • To have a working knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and QHSAS 18001
  • To have a working knowledge of NDT practices.
  • To have academic or technical qualification in either a mechanical engineering or quality discipline to demonstrate capability.
  • To have a degree of organisational ability for potential use in the QA Engineers absence.
  • Safe use and operation of Overhead Gantry Cranes and lifting accessories
  • Advanced conversational and written English/high level interpersonal skills

Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience in the use and care of all inspection related measuring and test equipment used by the company.
  • NDT – ASNT level 2, MPI and DPI.
  • Experience in working with imperial and metric units.
  • Experience for BOPs and surface/sub-sea drill through equipment
  • To have gained experience in the use of all inspection related measuring and test equipment.
  • To have a working knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001
  • An academic or technical qualification in either a mechanical engineering or quality discipline.
  • Organisational ability and time management skills
